Kafka-land, Florida (academics only)

This brief piece in the Chronicle of Higher Education, on Our Fair University's bold new approaches to "efficiency," is worth a look. Especially interesting are the comments from those on the ground, especially #2 ("jonathon") & #6 ("FAU Prof"). If the administration spent half the time they used concocting such arcane reorganizational schemes on actually improving things around here, who knows where we'd be?

A similar looking thing happened at University of Canterbury, where I was studying up until last year. Several close friends of mine lost supervisors partway through theses. For postgraduate work i'm having to look elsewhere. It's a real shame to see such happening elsewhere.

We have the same reorganization scam/distraction going at the University of Hawai`i. In the meantime, after cutting us to the bone over the course of more than decade, the governor now demands a 1/7 cut from our campus's budget (the flagship, so called). This ship has sprung a leak, and the flag is at half staff.

It's terrible. Believe it or not, there is little/no poetry taught at UC above 1st-year level, no supervision for poetry honours/MFA projects... The Arts aren't "fiscally viable".

well

The Gov't will solve all of this angst w bail-out/TARP $$$ for university.

let's see two auto companies now run by morons

banks run by gov't morons

anyway

you see who the govt picked to run Chrysler?!

the retired CEO after 18 years who ran A T &T

as far as "no supervision for poetry..."

"poetry" will be better off!

they gotta dumb-down the quality/experienced "teachers" in order to hire grad students
at very much lower salary and without a contract...

to teach advanced Electrical EE 342 triode/diode design...

or how to staple paper together and make a poetry book..

well

university gotta pay off debt interest on that new gazillion dollars sports/student union complex

solution? Nationalize ALL Education! which is what is begining to happen with everything..

well,

gotta fix leaky toilet so will run up to Home Despot and buy a Fluid-master... made in China!

The funny (in the sense that Vonnegut is funny) thing is that in New Zealand education IS nationalised....

and we're still in the same boat....

I wouldn't mind a slave-labour grad teaching job, as I'm unemployed at the moment. Gives me more time to write though.....
