[Shane MacGowan – what's wrong with this picture?]
After who knows how many years of trademark toothlessness, it seems that
Shane MacGowan has finally done a Martin Amis & gotten his choppers fixed. As the writer in the Daily Mail notes, perhaps now even the famously fastidious Americans will approve of his dental hygiene.

And why the approving tone, in contrast to the excoriation of Amis? Could it be...class?
Class -- in British journalism? I'm shocked, Vance, simply shocked that you'd suggest as much.
Of course, it may also have something to do with the fact that Amis was revamping a set of slightly snaggly but perfectly serviceable teeth, while Shane's mouth has been a horrifying abyss, with concomitant slurred speech & singing, for the past couple of decades. Frankly, I'd be tempted to put the new teeth down as a public (aesthetic) service.
My first thought on seeing that image was Photoshop. (And yes, you're right that Occam might find that the easy answer "class" is in this case not even the easiest.)
